A fic rec
Something in a recent post by archlords brought to mind a Star Trek: Voyager fic (No, don't stop reading! Hear me out!) that I love and haven't recced to anyone in a while:
In the Genes. I'm sure there are plenty of "what if there's a gene out there for homosexuality and humans decide to eliminate it" stories out there, but this one has really stuck with me for some reason.

As someone who sees sexuality as only a footnote to who a person is, I'm a bit curious. Why would it be good OR bad if we eliminated the gene? I mean, it's not like we're eliminating people, but rather just a trait.

Of course, in my mind, anything forced on the "patients" is evil, but I'm trying to look beyond that issue.

See the movie "Gattaca" for the answer. :D

Gattaca was more about discrimination than "gene therapy." And, frankly, discrimination can happen anywhere for any reason.

Yup--I agree. After all, to use your analogy, blonde hair and blue eyes are only a footnote to a person as well, but it doesn't stop certain people from elevating it into super-aryan demi-god status...

I think it's more the idea that it's a defect to be removed that bothers me--that there are plenty of people out there that think it would be good to remove it. And I suppose I feel like we'd be losing something if we cut out any trait (aside from some diseases, perhaps, but that's a gray area too), not to mention any additional traits that might be tied in with that one. Plus if you eliminate gay people, you also eliminate gay culture. I wouldn't want to see that go either. We'd also be losing the beauty of two men or two women together.

Hey, I remember this from your zipped pack of ST:V stories that you gave me from way back when! I really liked this, and not only because it's properly angsty ;) *thinks some more* For me, I really liked these few lines:
Now I feel no love, no pain, no... despair.

Just a small gap where something bright once lay.

It reminds me of something my abnormal psych professor once said about how manic depressives often stop taking their meds because they didn't feel like themselves. I'm not equating the two conditions, don't get me wrong; it does makes me wonder...what do we lose when we choose to turn something off? :)

Psst! Have you read [info]somniesperus's latest work, Miranda Priestly's Five Best Friends?

Yes! "Just a small gap where something bright once lay." is one of my favorite lines of all time.

And yeah, I wonder about that too.

I think I've only read one of [info]somniesperus's Devil Wears Prada fics. I know I should read more.
